The Obama administration joined 153 other nations Tuesday in approving an arms trade treaty opposed by the U.S. gun lobby.
Adoption of the treaty sets up a showdown between the White House and Congress, where a majority of senators have called on the president not to sign the treaty because it regulates small arms.
In one of the amendments to the Senate Budget last month, lawmakers voted 53 to 46 to stop the United States from joining the treaty.
The administration and treaty proponents say it would have no impact on the Second Amendment, since it applies to arms exports and not domestic arms sales.
Update: Now, will Obama sign it or not? His UN reps voted for it after he ensured its passage by dropping a consensus requirement, so I’m guessing he will.

The White House is “pleased” by the United Nations General Assembly’s Tuesday vote in favor of a treaty to regulate the global arms trade, but isn’t yet worrying about clearing it through the Senate.
“We’re certainly encouraged by and pleased by the outcome,” press secretary Jay Carney said. The administration has not yet determined whether President Obama will sign the Arms Trade Treaty. With the treaty approved by the United Nations, Carney said the administration will begin a “thorough” review process to consider whether to sign it.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott on Tuesday vowed to use every means necessary to fight the “dangerous” United Nations global arms treaty that was overwhelmingly approved by the General Assembly on Tuesday.
Speaking to a group of reporters on a conference call, Abbott warned that the arms treaty “raises a red warning flag to anyone concerned about the liberties guaranteed to all Americans under the United States Constitution.”
“That flag was raised when the United States agreed to the passage of the United Nations Arm Trade Treaty,” he added. “This treaty is a dangerous threat, not only to Second Amendment rights under the United States Constitution, but also erodes our constitutional liberties by placing more of the control of those liberties in the hands of bureaucrats at the United Nations.”

Fortunately, the odious, anti-American treaty was again voted down by the full Senate, but 46 Senators voted in favor of handing over our Constitutional rights to the UN.
Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) offered Amendment 139 that was passed with a 53 to 46 vote. His Amendment contained language to affirm that foreign treaties would not trump the U.S. Constitution.
“Mr. President,” Inhofe said on the floor of the Senate, “I want to make sure that everyone understands what the United Nations trade treaty is. The trade treaty is a treaty that cedes our authority to have trade agreements with our allies in terms of trading arms.”
He went on to say, “I want to very briefly read this so nobody over there or over here misunderstands what this amendment does. This is right out of the amendment. Uphold the Second Amendment rights, that is one thing. And secondly, prevent the United States from entering into the United Nations arms trade treaties.”
But many Democrats simply didn’t agree with Inhofe’s insistence that the U.S. Constitution trump the UN.

Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz on Saturday called on the UN to adopt a resolution condemning blasphemy, AFP reported.
“I demand a UN resolution that condemns any country or group that insults religions and prophets,” he reportedly said. “It is our duty and that of every Muslim to protect Islam and defend the prophets.”
The Saudi King is the latest Islamic leader to call for a ban on blasphemy following the release last month of the US-made Innocence of Muslims film, which triggered a wave of deadly anti-American violence across the Islamic world.
Abdullah also stressed the important of the “unity of the Islamic nation…to face the nation’s enemies.”

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 24 (UPI) – A top human rights official said from U.N. headquarters that world leaders need to find ways to ensure freedom of expression doesn’t equate to violence.
U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said there are signs of growing tensions between freedom of expression and religion.
“I have publicly regretted or condemned various displays of religious hatred or bigotry and have also consistently urged religious and political leaders to condemn the violence, including the loss of life that has taken place in reaction to such incidents in various parts of the world,” she said.
Opposition in the Middle East and North Africa to an anti-Islamic film produced in the United States turned violent, sparking widespread travel warnings and advisories from the U.S. government.
Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Kyung Wha-kang told officials in Morocco this week that incidents like last month’s attack in Libya in which a U.S. ambassador was killed have sounded “alarm bells about the level of hatred and cynicism that has permeated the minds of thoughtless or extremist elements in societies.”

President Obama made his first reference to what he called a “crude and disgusting video” at 11 minutes and 33 seconds into his speech. The video, which is a YouTube trailer for a shoddy film made by a man in southern California, has been blamed by the Obama administration for protests in the Middle East and North Africa.
“In every country, there are those who find different religious beliefs threatening; in every culture, those who love freedom for themselves must ask how much they are willing to tolerate freedom for others,” Obama said.
“That is what we saw play out the last two weeks, as a crude and disgusting video sparked outrage throughout the Muslim world,” he said. “I have made it clear that the United States government had nothing to do with this video, and I believe its message must be rejected by all who respect our common humanity. It is an insult not only to Muslims, but to America as well – for as the city outside these walls makes clear, we are a country that has welcomed people of every race and religion.”
Obama continued to cite the video for 5 minutes. “I know there are some who ask why we don’t just ban such a video,” he said. “The answer is enshrined in our laws: our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech.”
The president’s discussion of the video concluded at 16 minutes and 35 seconds into his speech. “Just as we cannot solve every problem in the world, the United States has not, and will not, seek to dictate the outcome of democratic transitions abroad, and we do not expect other nations to agree with us on every issue,” he said.

A renowned international human rights organization reminds that the Sudanese government has violently dispersed youth-led protests and that security forces have arrested and detained scores of perceived opponents. The Al-Bashir regime mistreats and tortures detainees and censors the media, the group, Human Rights Watch, writes in its assessment of the north African country. Additionally, Sudan’s indiscriminate bombing in civilian-populated areas has displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

The visit of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to Iran this week, as the country chairs a meeting of the so-called 120 member Non-Aligned Movement, says as much about the failure of President Obama’s Iran policy as it does about the UN’s abject lack of a moral compass.
The Obama administration was instrumental in supporting Ban Ki-moon’s bid for a second term, fought back congressional attempts to subject American UN funding to greater controls, and has run its foreign policy through UN institutions from the outset. But when President Obama asked the SG not to go to Iran during an election cycle that spotlights Obama’s alleged ability to isolate the regime, he turned him down flat.
The line of world leaders who don’t take this American president seriously just got longer.
The UN has a hard time confronting Iran for many reasons. For starters, Iran is a UN authority figure. Currently, Iran is a Vice-President of the UN General Assembly. Though it stones women to death for alleged adultery, and recently banned them from 80 fields of university study, Iran is a member of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. A master at arbitrary and unlawful killings, as well as torture, Iran is on the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. Infamous for an absence of freedom of speech and of the press, Iran is the Rapporteur of the UN Committee on Information.
The line of world leaders who don’t take this American president seriously just got longer.
Iran is also the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. But the UN still has no definition of terrorism because all if its Islamic members have signed on to the Islamic Terrorism Convention which says blowing up selected women and children doesn’t count.
Evidently, therefore, Ban Ki-moon felt the UN and Iran still have lots in common.
Also not holding the Secretary-General back was Iran’s systematic refusal to admit other UN officials, namely those specifically charged with investigating its human rights abuses. As recently as July, Iran refused to cooperate with the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran or allow him into the country. Also being refused entry after numerous requests are the UN Special Rapporteurs on torture, the independence of judges and lawyers, freedom of opinion and expression, summary or arbitrary executions, involuntary disappearances, freedom of religion or belief, and minorities. Obviously, the Secretary-General’s outing will permit Iran to tout his anodyne presence as an acceptable substitute.
Back in 2007 then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour made a similar mistake of attending a Tehran event of the Non-Aligned Movement. Following Arbour’s appearance, Iranian officials crowed that the UN had “taken part in the conference at the highest level” – and executed 21 people the day after she left.
Today, Iran’s genocidal sights are in plain view – with yet another call by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to “finish off” “the Zionist cancerous tumor” less than two weeks ago. Even the UN’s own slothful International Atomic Energy Agency threw up its hands on August 24 during its efforts to investigate Iran’s nuclear program and its military dimensions, and announced “important differences remain between Iran and the Agency…we have no plans for a follow-up meeting.” But why would Iran bother with the IAEA when the Secretary-General is coming to town?
President Obama has spent his first term in office watching the world’s most dangerous state make a dash for the world’s most dangerous weapon, and waiting for the UN Security Council, General Assembly, and Human Rights Council to get serious about the isolation and sanction of Iran. Ban Ki-moon’s Tehran sojourn legitimizes this rogue regime. President Obama’s foreign policy legitimizes the UN. It’s a toxic mix.

Paying Third World Countries to Create More Global Warming Gases
Not all of the deleterious consequences of liberal authoritarianism are deliberately malevolent. Many are simply unintended. Assuming that progressives really do believe in anthropogenic global warming, this serves as a classic example:
When the United Nations wanted to help slow climate change, it established what seemed [to moonbats] a sensible system.
Greenhouse gases were rated based on their power to warm the atmosphere. The more dangerous the gas, the more that manufacturers in developing nations would be compensated as they reduced their emissions.
But where the United Nations envisioned environmental reform, some manufacturers of gases used in air-conditioning and refrigeration saw a lucrative business opportunity.
They quickly figured out that they could earn one carbon credit by eliminating one ton of carbon dioxide, but could earn more than 11,000 credits by simply destroying a ton of an obscure waste gas normally released in the manufacturing of a widely used coolant gas. That is because that byproduct has a huge global warming effect. The credits could be sold on international markets, earning tens of millions of dollars a year.
That incentive has driven plants in the developing world not only to increase production of the coolant gas but also to keep it high — a huge problem because the coolant itself contributes to global warming and depletes the ozone layer.
Our supranational moonbat rulers couldn’t care less about pouring vast amounts of our money down the drain, especially if the drains are located in non-Western countries. But how can they live with themselves, knowing that they contributed to the oppression of polar bears by creating more gases alleged to make it be hot out? Simple: from their point of view, good intentions trump anything that happens in the real world.
