Whatever else it was, Selfie-gate was an iconic moment of truth in that it showed us the curtain slipping and gave a mass audience an unflattering glimpse of the backstage and thus the low calibre of the characters who supposedly rule us.
But it also showed something else. Major funerals are one of the few occasions when politicians can set aside the pretence of representing national and party interests. But dropping the mask in this way always raises the real danger of revealing the loathsome creature behind it.
On a day-to day basis, a compliant media routinely edit the visual information they gather to present our political leaders in totemic and compelling ways: as distinct entities and men and women with their own views and ideas. They are typically shown speaking before large crowds or political gatherings, persuading or else combatting alternative ideas and interests.
This is all part of the great smoke and mirrors show that remains psychologically compelling even when we suspect it to be a sham.
The Obamas, Camerons, and Mandelas of this world act out their roles as distinct leaders of distinct countries, parties, and interests, but the reality is they are all members of one big international club, with collective interests, united against the various tribes of “shitmunchers” (Brits, Yanks, Tories, Democrats, Blacks, etc.), whom they trick into voting for them.

Senators voted 56-38 to approve Washington lawyer Patricia Millett to join the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, the nation’s second most powerful court.
Millett probably would have been blocked by filibuster — before the Senate was fundamentally transformed into a rubber stamp for Obama.
Both sides saw Millett’s appointment as pivotal. It will give Democratic-appointed judges a 5-4 majority over those chosen by Republican presidents for that court, which rules on the legality of White House actions and federal agency regulations.
Wars have been fought over less. Control of the DC district court means Obama can inflict anything he likes through the fourth branch of government, the grotesquely massive and utterly unaccountable bureaucracy.
Economically crippling carbon taxes couldn’t make it through even a Democrat-controlled Senate, due to fear of retribution by voters. But the ideologically rabid EPA has no such concerns. Consequently, oppressive restrictions on the harmless carbon emissions that result from literally all economically productive activity will be imposed with zero meaningful input from voters. This will help drive up unemployment, increasing the dependency on federal largess on which the Democrat Party relies so heavily, and move us rapidly toward a centrally planned economy similar to the Soviet Union’s.
Even with the most shameless exploitation of Newtown conceivable, Democrats were unable to ram through seriously damaging attacks on the Second Amendment at the national level. No matter; the EPA can simply declare that lead hurts the environment.

) and three other youths from the home of a Methodist minister, Rev. Paul Verryn, claiming she had the youths taken to her home because she suspected the reverend was sexually abusing them. The four were beaten to get them to admit to having had sex with the minister. Seipei was accused of being an informer, and his body later found in a field with stab wounds to the throat on 6 January 1989.
In 1991, she was convicted of kidnapping and being an accessory to assault in connection with the death of Seipei. Her six-year jail sentence was reduced to a fine on appeal. The final report of the South African Truth and Reconciliation commission, issued in 1998, found “Ms Winnie Madikizela Mandela politically and morally accountable for the gross violations of human rights committed by the MUFC” and that she “was responsible, by omission, for the commission of gross violations of human rights.” 
In 1992, she was accused of ordering the murder of Dr. Abu-Baker Asvat, a family friend who had examined Seipei at Mandela’s house, after Seipei had been abducted but before he had been killed.
Mandela’s role was later probed as part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
hearings, in 1997.
She was said to have paid the equivalent of $8,000 and supplied the firearm used in the killing, which took place on 27 January 1989.
The hearings were later adjourned amid claims that witnesses were being intimidated on Winnie Mandela’s orders.

Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Monday, feminist Gloria Steinem said receiving the Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama would be “honoring the work of Margaret Sanger.”
“I hope this is retroactive in honoring the work of Margaret Sanger,” said Steinem about the woman who founded what would become Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the largest abortion provider in the United States.
“I hope that she would celebrate this recognition that reproductive freedom is a human right at least as crucial as freedom of speech and that no government should dictate whether or when we have children,” Steinem said.
In her remarks Steinem said that “the power of this honor may be even more evident in the withholding than in the giving,” noting that Sanger never got the medal.
“I was reminded by Ellen Chesler, biography of Margaret Sanger, that President Lyndon Johnson, even as he signed the first federal and international family planning act into law, refused to bestow the metal of freedom on Sanger,” Steinem said. “He feared reprisal from the Catholic Church.
“Ellen told me that when she looked at Sanger’s private history papers at Smith College – I’m proud to say the biggest archive of women history – she found a poignant little hand-written note from Sanger, asking that her body be buried here next to her husband but that her heart be removed to Japan – the only country in the world that had every bestowed a public honor on her,” Steinem said.

To be born an American, or to become an American, you need only know and understand four things that we have written down. Our founding document, The Declaration of Independence. Our agreement with ourselves and our government that specifies and protects the self-evident truths and freedoms of the Declaration, The Constitution. Our national motto: “In God we trust.” And our credo, “The Gettysburg Address.”
A credo is a short and straightforward statement of beliefs or principles. A credo has no fixed length but lies somewhere between a motto and a manifesto. The most widely known traditional credo would be “The Apostles Creed.”
Although it is not often thought of as such, Lincoln’s brief oration at Gettysburg at noon on that long ago November day is, in all its elements, our national credo. Although shaped as prose fit to be cut, as it has been, into stone, The Gettysburg Address is also a lyrical poem as polished as a crystal prism. Through it, all that we had been up until that day midway through our most terrible conflict passed and was transformed into the multifaceted nation we have become today. And it is still not finished with us, nor we with it.
The Address shows us first how we came into existence as “the last best hope of Earth.” It echoes the opening refrain of the Declaration’s notes of liberty and equality. It reminds us of our original goals of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness;” goals to which our founding fathers pledged their “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor.” It implies that all generations of Americans must, if the nation is to endure, pledge the same.
Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
The poem then brings the credo into the present. Not just the present moment of November 19, 1863, but all the present moments that came after right up to this very day in November in 2010. Then the argument between Americans had become so pitched that civil war between the contending factions had torn the nation asunder. We have come close to similar passes since then several times, but have — remembering “the better angels of our nature” — always turned aside and found a way to move forward together as a great nation of a greater people. Now may be another such moment; another such turning. Lincoln could not know our moment, but in his credo he indicates his belief that the test of his moment will be passed and that the nation will long endure. He also knows the cost of that test for those who “gave their lives that that nation might live.”
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
From that moment in that long ago November, Lincoln’s credo casts a cold eye on the ultimate costs of liberty whenever men determine that liberty, for themselves and their posterity, is worth whatever sacrifice is asked of them. Out of that vision he tells us what the duty of all future generations of Americans must be.
In the closing of the Address, Lincoln is at once a President, a poet, a seer, and an American. As such, he closes the credo to which all future Americans must cleave. The credo requires us to be constantly renewing the work of liberty. The credo tells us that we — if we are to bear true faith and allegiance to all those who have built, stone by stone, poem by poem, word by word, and life by life, the city on the hill that is America — must always be dedicated to the unfinished work that is always before us. The credo requires that we “highly resolve” to leave our nation in a greater state of liberty than we found it. And to leave our Union entire and intact as “the last best hope of Earth.”
The most successful revolution in history was not the Russian Revolution or the Chinese Revolution. It was the American Revolution. It began more than two centuries ago and it continues to this day. It is not over yet. This is its credo.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Dear Rep Lewis,
While we in the TEA Party movement — that is, those Americans who stand and fight for constitutional principles, the sovereignty of the individual, and the epistemology of the Enlightenment — appreciate your timely reminder of the Democratic Party’s past involvements in segregation and the brutal subjugation of parts of the citizenry, we would like to correct your latest attempt to tie our efforts at resisting the remaking of the citizen-as-subject, as an economic unit in service of a state master, that is, as slaves, to past attempts by your Party to enslave Americans, or keep them segregated and subjugated, tied to some particular plantation or other over which you lord.
The Supreme Court has ruled before — and John Roberts, in a last minute attempt to secure for himself a legacy of bipartisan comity rather than judicial rigor, a move that will forever tarnish his reputation and damage the standing of the Court, ruled in the case of ObamaCare — that in fact the US government does have a right to force Americans into a kind of sanctioned slavery. In this case, we are told that the federal government can force us to enter in a contract it writes for us and demands we pay for under penalty of fine or imprisonment, even though to enter into that contract means we are compelled to purchase services we may not want or need, and by doing so, subsidize those same services for those who can’t afford to purchase them on their own. Legalized theft disguised as forced charity.
If to resist such coercion truly reminds you of an attempt to keep southern blacks away from lunch counters or in the backs of buses, one can only conclude that you haven’t the faculties to operate a shoe lace, much less serve as a lawmaker — though to be fair, this is not merely an indictment upon you, but upon those who vote for you, who have been taught to believe (and haven’t the intellectual curiosity to challenge) such ludicrous parallels as those you try to draw. In one instance, we have people of all races, genders, sexual orientations, and prior political affiliations rising up to protest the unpopular imposition upon us of a health insurance system that we neither want nor can afford — one that we know will decrease the quality of our health care while increasing our financial burdens, should we not be that part of your constituency that you insist be able to exist on the labor of others through your endless wealth redistribution schemes, the very thing that buys you votes and keeps your client list full. In the second instance, we have those who — while they worked to make sure they themselves were heavily subsidized and not forced to live under the very law they insist upon foisting on us, even as they’ve proven that access to the means of procuring the health insurance they claim to provide is impossible, onerous, and open to all sort of invasions of privacy and the theft of personal data — still insist we shut up and accept our lot as subjects.
And yet you have the audacity to tie the former to racial oppressors, while painting yourselves and your subjugators as noble and compassionate liberators, marchers against the predations of a capitalist system whose private health insurance providers (to the extent they’re even able to remain private, given the breadth and scope of government regulation) routinely grant claims at a higher rate than previous iterations of government health insurance (Medicare has a higher rejection rate than all private insurers)?
You sir, are a disgrace to the civil rights movement, a disgrace to the seriousness of the historic fight for equal rights for blacks (led by Republicans), a disgrace to those you purport to represent, yet upon whose ignorance and perpetually stoked victimization you continue to prey.
I despise people like you. You’ve turned a past injustice into a cottage race industry upon which you live like a parasite. And your attempts to tether that past injustice to those of us who today fight for the freedom and autonomy of the individual to resist the oppression of the state suggests that it is you, sir, who today carries the fire hoses and have shown yourself willing, time and again, to release the dogs against those who oppose your designs on their liberty.
In short, you are an opportunistic relic who, your protestations to the contrary, has become a bane to the very progress of the people your purport to speak for. So go fuck yourself.

Over the last decade meetings with senior ministers in the previous Labour administration around Islamophobia or anti-Muslim prejudice literally led nowhere. The focus was extremism, extremism and extremism.
TellMamaUK* Over the last 3 years, there have been problems, though there has been an important re-shifting of the relationship between the Government and Muslim communities. Out has gone violent extremism just related to Muslim communities and in has come ‘tackling extremism,’ which includes Far Right and other forms of extremism.

Out has gone groups that placed themselves as sole representatives of Muslim communities, and in has come a multitude of voices from Muslim communities. Out has also gone inaction about Islamophobia or anti-Muslim prejudice and in has come a consistency in dealing with this social phenomenon which Baroness Warsi stated in early 2011, had sadly passed the ‘dinner table’ test.
This change in position around anti-Muslim prejudice is clear through recent speeches by the Prime Minister and others. Take for example, David Cameron talking recently at the Eid-Ul-Adha celebration at 10 Downing Street. The full text of the speech can be found here and is well worth a read to reflect the change in position.
The Prime Minister makes clear the following: “We still have a huge battle fighting prejudice in our country, and I think perhaps particularly Islamophobia – people telling lies about your religion – is one that we have to face up to particularly strongly in our country. And it’s a time to remember that. It’s also a time to remember that welcoming people to our country of all faiths is something that has to go across every single part of life.”
Or take this position by David Cameron regarding misinformation circulated in his consitituency regarding the development of a local mosque. Or take a range of projects that ministers within his Government have approved and will be looking to approve.
What the Prime Minister needs right now, is people who believe in pluralism, equality and fairness in our society and communities to stand with him; to support his vision of a country where hate should be challenged through existing systems and structures and where every community has a role and a part to play in that future. We say to the Prime Minister, this is a vision that draws all people towards a modern, stronger and more competitive Britain. Thank you!
