No more training future soldiers about who the enemy is and why they want to kill us. Now, West Point cadets visit a NJ city with a large enemy Muslim population to witness the cultural diversity they will encounter overseas. (In other words, to brainwash them into believing that the so-called culture of 7th Century savages is just as good as ours)
Washington Post(H/T Robin H) The men and women in crisp U.S. military uniforms walked in close formation through the bustling, traffic-choked streets, passing women in full Muslim hijab, sari-clad Indian mothers pushing strollers, worshippers heading to an Egyptian Coptic church, and small shops with signs in Arabic, Hindi, Korean and a dozen other languages. (But notice in the photo below, female academy cadets are wearing Muslim headbags, no Indian saris or Korean attire. And in the photos and videos below, they only show the cadets at Islamic centers where the speakers are all Muslims)
The cadets are visiting as part of a class at West Point on peacekeeping and reconstruction called “Winning the Peace.” The class ends in a three-day crash course designed to make the future officers _ and, ultimately, the soldiers under their command _ more sensitive to cultural differences.

DHIMMI A BRIEF OVERVIEW
7th-21st century. The notion of Dhimmitude, originating in the 7th century, still applies today to non-Muslims under Islamic rule—whether Jews or Christians, whether in Saudi Arabia or in Sudan. Dhimmitude began in 628 CE when Mohammed and his forces conquered the Jewish oasis at Khaybar. They massacred many of the Jews and forced the rest to accept a pact (“Dhimma”) which rendered them inferiror to their Muslim conquerors. Over the centuries, the ideology of Dhimmitude expanded into a formal system of religious apartheid.
No legal rights. Jews may not testify in court against a Muslim and have no legal right to dispute or challenge anything done to them by Muslims. There is no such thing as a Muslim raping a Jewish woman; there is no such thing as a Muslim murdering a Jew (at most, it can be manslaughter). In contrast, a Jew who strikes a Muslim is killed.
Humiliation and vulnerability. Jews and Christians had to walk around with badges or veils identifying them as Jews or Christians. The yellow star that Jews had wear in Nazi Germany did not originate in Europe. It was borrowed from the Muslim world where it was part of the apartheid system of Dhimmitude.
It wasn’t a tour of duty overseas, but a field trip to Jersey City, just 60 miles down the Hudson River from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
The city of 250,000 is one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse places in America, and the West Point cadets are visiting as part of a class at the academy on peacekeeping and reconstruction called “Winning the Peace.” The class ends in a three-day crash course designed to make the future officers — and, ultimately, the soldiers under their command — more sensitive to cultural differences.

The program has taken on new urgency as the Army deals with the fallout from a string of embarrassing episodes in Afghanistan, including reports of U.S. soldiers posing with the bloody remains of suicide bombers, urinating on Afghan corpses and burning Muslim holy books.
During the visit to Jersey City, the 23 cadets in the class stay overnight at a mosque and attend Islamic prayers. They also go to an Egyptian Coptic Christian church, a synagogue and a Hindu religious service, and sample the foods of the cultures they encounter. (Funny, how all the videos only show the mosque visits)
At the Islamic Center of Jersey City, where the cadets stay, program organizer Ahmed Shedeed said the visit to the city is an eye-opener for some students.
I guess the only ‘Koreans’ (woman in middle) the cadets met were Muslims, too?
“Some of these soldiers have never seen anybody different. Some have never seen a black person or eaten Chinese food, and they come to a place like Jersey City and they understand they’re not the only ones in the world, that there are civilizations and cultures that came before theirs,” he said.
Emad Attaalaa of St. George’s Egyptian Coptic Church, where the cadets spent an afternoon learning about the history of the church and enjoyed a Middle Eastern-style lunch, said the program has mutual benefits, getting young people from his largely Egyptian congregation interested in the military or a career in law enforcement. “Kids in the church come and ask me after meeting the cadets, ‘What do you think about joining the Army?’” he said. (Gee, I bet they didn’t hear that from anyone in the Islamic center?)
At the Islamic Center, congregants explained to the cadets the importance of removing their shoes in prayer areas, and the female cadets were shown the proper way to cover themselves with Muslim headscarves out of respect.

Jersey City sits across the Hudson River from New York. Nearly 40 percent of the population is foreign-born, and more than half its residents speak a language other than English at home, according to census figures. It has a large Muslim population. Some of the plotters of the deadly 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center attended a mosque there.
Col. Cindy Jebb, a social sciences professor at West Point who has taught course on cultural anthropology as well as terrorism and counterterrorism, said the academy is fortunate to have such a melting pot close by.
“When you start to learn about other cultures, it makes you very self-aware, helps create a more adaptable thinker, and it develops empathy,” she said. (Empathy is the last thing you need for people who are trying to kill you)
But they don’t learn about culture, only religion:
Although this year’s visit focused on the Arab Spring uprisings across the Middle East, she said the controversies that have hurt U.S. efforts to gain the trust of Afghans are also discussed with cadets.
“We always use such incidents as a learning opportunity,” Jebb said. “Looking at it in the larger context of understanding that these actions of a few do not reflect the entire military, we discuss why these actions are so detrimental, and how you go about building a tone within a unit of cultural understanding.”
At dinner with the cadets, Muslim women were segregated from men. Only female cadets in headbags were allowed to dine with the male cadets. Muslims were offended.

Politically Correct Multi-culturalism is Killing Western Civilization
The title of my essay was the expression of the epiphany which the Leftist French philosopher, Jean-Francois Revel (1924-2006), experienced after visiting the U.S.A. in the 1960s.
That is, after actually seeing what America was like, he woke up to the real dynamism and greatness of her freedom, as opposed to the caricature from all the anti-American propaganda he had, until then, taken for granted.
Years later, after 911 and after seeing anti-Americanism rear its ugly head yet again around the world, blaming 911 on American foreign policy as some kind of deserved “blowback”, he published a book in 2003, Anti-Americanism, bringing together all the various threads of his reawakening.
As a former Leftist, he had lauded Communism and Socialism as the agents of righteous change for the 20th century. But after his epiphany in America, he saw that the real revolution was happening in America — that the real revolution is, in fact, America herself.
I now quote more extensively from Revel from a paragraph that ends with the titular sentence above:
“As I stressed in my book Without Marx or Jesus, what I meant by “revolution” in the context of America was less a political phenomenon at the highest levels of power than a series of transformations spontaneously occurring within society at a deep level. These radical changes had been born, were evolving and would continue to evolve independently of political transitions at the national level. You can change the government without changing society; conversely, you can change society without changing the government. The American Free Speech Movement sprang forth and continued to grow as vigorously under Republican presidents as under Democrats; it was able to do so largely because it never–or very rarely–regressed into the backward ideologies of the nineteenth century or the Marxist pseudo-revolutionary theoretical straitjackets of the twentieth. In my book, I argued that a revolution in this sense is a phenomenon that had hitherto never taken place, an event that would develop along lines other than the known historical ones and that could not be thought about–or even perceived–in terms of the old categories. It was obvious to me that the real revolution was taking place not in Cuba, but in California.”
While Revel is right to revel in this American achievement of becoming the global driving force of a powerful “liberal democracy”, his enthusiasm seems a bit one-dimensional and vulnerable to a simplistic optimism.
I.e., the very same revolution Revel champions also carried with it the pathogen, so to speak, of PC MC (Politically Correct Multi-Culturalism) — a pathogen that would be far more successful than Leftism or its more radical forms of Communism, Marxism or Fascism in influencing the hearts and minds of millions of Westerners. On all sides of the political spectrum — Left, Right, Center and that nougaty center, the Comfortably Apolitical — and on all levels of sociological existence — whether rich, poor or middle class — PC MC has had enormous effect.
Certainly, many people on the Right may resist the pathogen of PC MC with respect to some sociopolitical issues. With regard to one issue, however, the majority of Westerners agree to see it through the lens of PC MC. And that one issue is the problem of Islam. The majority of the West persists — sincerely and obtusely — in resisting the only conclusion which a reasonable mind can draw after assessing the mountains and oceans of dots of data about Islam and about Muslims. When those dots are connected, they lead to the following conclusions:
1) Islam is a deadly seditious ideology, deadly to all cultures and nations
2) All Muslims who enable Islam are therefore deadly seditionists
3) While there may exist a certain number of Muslims who do not wish to advance the deadly sedition of their Islam, our problem is that we cannot tell the difference between them and the millions of Muslims who do — and so, if we want to honor our #1 priority, the safety of our societies, we are forced to treat all Muslims as equally deadly.
Because of the effects of PC MC on millions of Westerners, they cannot think the three propositions listed above. They positively recoil from them, and fear that if they even thought this thought crime, they would be guilty of “bigotry” and “racism” — and that sooner or later they would be unable to stop themselves from going down the slippery slope toward concentration camps and genocide against Muslims.
And the reason for this massively successful mainstream dominance of the PC MC mindset throughout the West is, precisely, this shift in worldview that occurred in the 20th century, given a tremendous boost by the “cultural revolution” of America in the 1960s.
Along with the waves of genuinely good social change which Jean-Francois Revel rightly celebrates, unfortunately also came surf-riding the axioms and givens of PC MC.
Let’s hope we can separate these two currents of the modern West reasonably, and see — before it’s too late — that Islam is the worst enemy of liberal democracy and of classical freedom the world has ever known; and that PC MC, in enabling Islam, is only shooting itself, and its own West, in the foot.

Dan Savage has personally insulted virtually every Republican candidate for higher office. Last year, Savage said on Bill Maher’s show, “I wish the Republicans were all f***ing dead.”
But he saved some special vitriol for Herman Cain. When Cain stated that he thought that homosexual activity was a choice in October 2011, Savage responded by telling Cain to “show us how a man can choose to be gay. Suck my dick, Herman.”
During 2009, Savage tried to coin the term “Saddlebacking” in order to target pro-Proposition 8 Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren; he defined the term as “the phenomenon of Christian teens engaging in unprotected anal sex in order to preserve their virginities.” Savage also said, “F— you, Utah,” since Mormons largely backed Proposition 8.
In 2006, Savage said that Green Party Senate candidate Carl Romanelli, who was running against Democrat Bob Casey (the eventual winner), “should be dragged behind a pickup truck until there’s nothing left but the rope.” Casey was so offended he refused Savage’s campaign donations.
This guy sounds like mommy and daddy never corrected him, or made him respect others. He acts like the classic bully, and he will continue to do so, and the Left will salivate over him. But one day, Dan Savage will over step his luck, and he will have his face punched in. And, then, he will cry about being a victim, and blame Homophobia.

Language used in the service of making the foul, twisted and unspeakable seem somehow good, upright and acceptable sets me right off. Liberty is a beautiful thing, but how can we continue in the face of confusion? That a whore is being elevated to a position of honor as a speaker at the college isn’t news; politicians travel the lecture circuit all the time.
Colleges and universities have been known to push the envelope when it comes to inviting controversial figures to campuses, and Williams College, a prestigious private institution in western Massachusetts, is the latest — by inviting a porn star.
The speaker, Jiz Lee, is described in the college calendar advertising the event as “an award-winning genderqueer performer, author, artist and pleasure activist.” Friday night, a sample of the performer’s work is scheduled to be shown on campus followed by a discussion with students.
The disappointment here is with the school administration. How does Williams College possibly think that Jiz Lee is adding any lasting value to student education? Is Jiz going to speak at length of the nihilistic futility of a protein-drenched life lived in front of a camera? How letting sexual pleasure, a wonderful peripheral aspect to the joy of carrying on the human tradition, become the focal point of life, is ultimately unsatisfying? Note that I take a libertarian view of what Jiz is on about, insofar as no laws are broken, so long as my ignorance remains intact.
It’s not that The World’s Youngest Blogger must be ‘protected’ from ‘attack’ by the likes of Lee. Oh no. It’s just that, when you look a the rule of nines, the groin counts for 1% of the surface area of the body. So, a rational analysis of hedonism has to step back and ask: utility, or futility? In the bigger picture, so what?
The task of parenthood is to equip children with the rationality to spot a con job. The administrators of Williams College are the Jack Kevorkians of the Cultural Assisted Suicide movement, and deserve to be ignored. WTF, ‘Pleasure Activist’? That sounds like a Community Organizer in the buff.

Liberals have leapt on the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Florida to push for the repeal of “stand your ground” laws and to demand tighter gun control. (MSNBC’S Karen Finney blamed “the same people who stymied gun regulation at every point.”)
This would be like demanding more funding for the General Services Administration after seeing how its employees blew taxpayer money on a party weekend in Las Vegas.
We don’t know the facts yet, but let’s assume the conclusion MSNBC is leaping to is accurate: George Zimmerman stalked a small black child and murdered him in cold blood, just because he was black.
If that were true, every black person in America should get a gun and join the National Rifle Association, America’s oldest and most august civil rights organization.
Apparently this has occurred to no one because our excellent public education system ensures that no American under the age of 60 has the slightest notion of this country’s history.
Gun control laws were originally promulgated by Democrats to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. This allowed the Democratic policy of slavery to proceed with fewer bumps and, after the Civil War, allowed the Democratic Ku Klux Klan to menace and murder black Americans with little resistance.
(Contrary to what illiterates believe, the KKK was an outgrowth of the Democratic Party, with overlapping membership rolls. The Klan was to the Democrats what the American Civil Liberties Union is today: Not every Democrat is an ACLU’er, but every ACLU’er is a Democrat. Same with the Klan.)
In 1640, the very first gun control law ever enacted on these shores was passed in Virginia. It provided that blacks — even freemen — could not own guns.
Chief Justice Roger Taney’s infamous opinion in Dred Scott v. Sandford circularly argued that blacks could not be citizens because if they were citizens, they would have the right to own guns: “[I]t would give them the full liberty,” he said, “to keep and carry arms wherever they went.”
With logic like that, Republicans eventually had to fight a Civil War to get the Democrats to give up slavery.
Alas, they were Democrats, so they cheated.
After the war, Democratic legislatures enacted “Black Codes,” denying black Americans the right of citizenship — such as the rather crucial one of bearing arms — while other Democrats (sometimes the same Democrats) founded the Ku Klux Klan.
For more than a hundred years, Republicans have aggressively supported arming blacks, so they could defend themselves against Democrats.
The original draft of the Anti-Klan Act of 1871 — passed at the urging of Republican president Ulysses S. Grant — made it a federal felony to “deprive any citizen of the United States of any arms or weapons he may have in his house or possession for the defense of his person, family, or property.” This section was deleted from the final bill only because it was deemed both beyond Congress’ authority and superfluous, inasmuch as the rights of citizenship included the right to bear arms.
Under authority of the Anti-Klan Act, President Grant deployed the U.S. military to destroy the Klan, and pretty nearly completed the job.
But the Klan had a few resurgences in the early and mid-20th century. Curiously, wherever the Klan became a political force, gun control laws would suddenly appear on the books.
This will give you an idea of how gun control laws worked. Following the firebombing of his house in 1956, Dr. Martin Luther King, who was, among other things, a Christian minister, applied for a gun permit, but the Alabama authorities found him unsuitable. A decade later, he won a Nobel Peace Prize.
How’s that “may issue” gun permit policy working for you?
The NRA opposed these discretionary gun permit laws and proceeded to grant NRA charters to blacks who sought to defend themselves from Klan violence — including the great civil rights hero Robert F. Williams.
A World War II Marine veteran, Williams returned home to Monroe, N.C., to find the Klan riding high — beating, lynching and murdering blacks at will. No one would join the NAACP for fear of Klan reprisals. Williams became president of the local chapter and increased membership from six to more than 200.
But it was not until he got a charter from the NRA in 1957 and founded the Black Armed Guard that the Klan got their comeuppance in Monroe.
Williams’ repeated thwarting of violent Klan attacks is described in his stirring book, “Negroes With Guns.” In one crucial battle, the Klan sieged the home of a black physician and his wife, but Williams and his Black Armed Guard stood sentry and repelled the larger, cowardly force. And that was the end of it.
As the Klan found out, it’s not so much fun when the rabbit’s got the gun.
The NRA’s proud history of fighting the Klan has been airbrushed out of the record by those who were complicit with the KKK, Jim Crow and racial terror, to wit: the Democrats.
In the preface to “Negroes With Guns,” Williams writes: “I have asserted the right of Negroes to meet the violence of the Ku Klux Klan by armed self-defense — and have acted on it. It has always been an accepted right of Americans, as the history of our Western states proves, that where the law is unable, or unwilling, to enforce order, the citizens can, and must act in self-defense against lawless violence.”
Contrary to MSNBC hosts, I do not believe the shooting in Florida is evidence of a resurgent KKK. But wherever the truth lies in that case, gun control is always a scheme of the powerful to deprive the powerless of the right to self-defense.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Under heavy pressure from farm groups, the Obama administration is dropping an effort to prevent children from doing hazardous work on farms owned by anyone other than their parents.
The Labor Department says it is withdrawing proposed rules that would ban children younger than 16 from using most power-driven equipment. The rules also would prevent those younger than 18 from working in feed lots, grain bins and stockyards.
The agency says thousands of comments have expressed concern about the impact of the changes on small family-owned farms. Many farm groups have complained that the rules would upset traditions in which children often work alongside relatives other than parents to learn how a farm operates.

Why Adults Should Ditch The Shorts, Wear Suits

When I board an airplane these days, all the middle-aged men are dressed like me—when I was an 8-year-old. They’re in shorts and T-shirts. And it’s not just on airplanes. It’s in business offices, teachers’ lounges, and churches. The priest is still wearing a cassock, but who knows what he’s got on underneath?
Sometimes, mainly in cold weather, we’re spared the sight of middle-aged men in T-shirts and shorts because they’re wearing T-shirts and jeans. Jeans fit the mature male one of two ways, both dirigible in nature. You make a public impression that’s either Hindenburg or Goodyear blimp.
The point of turning Casual Friday into Dress-Down-Month-of-Sundays is to be more comfortable. But, possessing a middle-aged man’s body myself, I’m more comfortable covering it than displaying it like flabby laundry on a clothesline.
And where do you put your things? I can’t leave the house without wallet, car keys, house keys, lighter, cigar case, cigar cutter, nicotine gum—because I’m giving up cigars—clean handkerchief, spare clean handkerchief for ladies in distress, and a fountain pen in case business correspondence starts being conducted on paper again. I have ten pockets in my suit and need them all, including the little one inside the jacket flap to ensure that I forget where the theater tickets are.
Those who work and travel in what’s basically their underwear require the giant Boy Scout backpacks that you see grown men huffing under in airplane aisles every time you turn around. And when they turn around, you get smacked right in the Scotch and rocks.
Comfortable means “easy.” So: Nothing’s easier than matching a pair of pants and a jacket that look exactly alike. I’ve got a closet full of blue suits and black wing tips. In 2010, the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban adopted a policy of locking up undocumented migrants while authorities adjudicate their asylum claims. Critics, including the writers of a U.N. report say the policy is unusually harsh and out of step with European norms and international law. Inmates at a detention center in the eastern city of Nyirbator jammed up against the metal grills covering the windows at the sight of Associated Press reporters on the street below.
“I come here for asylum, not prison!” shouted one skull-capped inmate from the second floor. Another lifted up his shirt to display a wound in his chest. “No medicine! No go to hospital!” he shouted. Other prisoners yelled that they have been beaten by prison guards and receive inadequate food supplies. (Gee, even from the detention center, they are making demands)
The new report by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees criticizes Hungary for treating legitimate asylum seekers as if they were illegal immigrants. (No, not immigrants, illegal aliens) Koefner confirmed that UNHCR has received “serious” reports of verbal and physical abuse by detention center guards. Police sometimes subject the asylum seekers to humiliation by escorting them to court dates in handcuffs and leashes, he added. (I wonder if big German Shepherds are attached to those leashes?)

Observer News Controversy frequently follows Hassan Shibly, Esq., but it does not so much as slow down this advocate for shoving Islam down the throats of unsuspecting Americans.
Shibly, whose November presentation to college-bound seniors at Steinbrenner High School raised parental ires and subsequently produced a stormy Hillsborough County School Board session, spoke here last week. He was the invited guest of the Universalist Unitarians.
Shibly heads the Tampa office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). And his mission, he told the 30 or so assembled UUs, is to acquaint non-Muslims with the facts (lies) of the faith. It is ignorance, he asserted, that leads to misunderstandings. EGYPT’s ‘moderate’ Muslim Brotherhood says, a husband may have sex with his dead wife, then marry his 14-year old girlfriend

Egyptian husbands will soon be legally allowed to have sex with their dead wives – for up to six hours after their death. The controversial new law is part of a raft of measures being introduced by the radical Islamist-dominated parliament. It will also see the minimum age of marriage lowered to 14 and the ridding of women’s rights of getting education and employment.
DAILY MAIL (H/T Maria) Egypt’s National Council for Women is campaigning against the changes, saying that ‘marginalising and undermining the status of women would negatively affect the country’s human development’.
The parliamentary attacks on women’s rights has drawn great criticism from women’s organizations, who dismissed the calls and accused the MPs of wishing to destroy the little gains Egyptian women attained after long years of organized struggle.
Dr Mervat al-Talawi, head of the NCW, wrote to the Egyptian People’s Assembly Speaker Dr Saad al-Katatni addressing her concerns.
Egyptian journalist Amro Abdul Samea reported in the al-Ahram newspaper that Talawi complained about the legislations which are being introduced under ‘alleged religious interpretations.’
The subject of a husband having sex with his dead wife arose in May 2011 when Moroccan cleric Zamzami Abdul Bari said marriage remains valid even after death, alarabiya.net reported. Two years ago, Zamzami incited further controversy in Morocco when he said it was permissible for pregnant women to drink alcohol.
It seems the topic, which has sparked outrage, has now been picked up on by Egypt’s politicians.
TV anchor Jaber al-Qarmouty slammed the notion of letting a husband have sex with his wife after her death under the so-called ‘Farewell Intercourse’ draft law.
He said: ‘This is very serious. Could the panel that will draft the Egyptian constitution possibly discuss such issues? Did Abdul Samea see by his own eyes the text of the message sent by Talawi to Katatni? ‘This is unbelievable. It is a catastrophe to give the husband such a right! Has the Islamic trend reached that far? Is there really a draft law in this regard? Are there people thinking in this manner?’
Many members of the newly-elected, and majority Islamist parliament, have been accused of launching attacks against women’s rights in the country.
They wish to cancel many, if not most, of the laws that promote women’s rights, most notably a law that allows a wife to obtain a divorce without obstructions from her partner. The implementation of the Islamic right to divorce law, also known as the Khula, ended years of hardship and legal battles women would have to endure when trying to obtain a divorce.

Former Danish Minister says, churches should NOT be turned into mosques since ‘Islam is an enemy of Christianty.’
Islam in Europe Islam is an enemy of Christianity, says former Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs, Birthe Rønn Hornbech (Liberals), and therefore Muslims shouldn’t be taking over churches which have closed down. 16-17 churches in Copenhagen face closure.
The former minister spoke on the issue after Per Ramsdal, pastor of Brorson’s Church in Nørrebro, suggested the churches can be used by Muslims, Buddhists or Hindus.
Birthe Rønn Hornbech wrote in a mail to Berlinkske News that he will publicly oppose the churches being turned over to another religious, when that religious is a direct enemy of Christianity, as is Islam, for example. Even if it doesn’t necessarily apply to Danish Muslims, Islam is an enemy of Christianity.
Kirkefondet (Church Foundation), which owns half the churches due to be closed down, has denied that their churches will be sold to Muslims or other faiths. General Secretary Morten Skrubbeltrang ‘fears there will be public resistance, if a church will be turned into a mosque’.
Birthe Rønn Hornbech backs Kirkefondet’s right to decide who the churches will be sold to. However, he expects them to use the money for a new church where it is needed.

How The Left Plans To Control People in America
The Empire of Poverty
Controlling a large number of people isn’t easy. The United States alone consists of 312 million people spread out across nearly 4 million square miles. Add on nearly 500 million for the population of the European Union and another nearly 4 million square miles of territory. Then pile on Canada with 34 million people and another 4 million square miles, Australia with 22 million and 3 million square miles and a few other stragglers here and there, and the postmodern rulers of the progressive empire have to cope with nearly a billion people spread out across 15 million square miles.
Large territories and large numbers of people are very difficult to govern. Structures tend to break down and people further away from the centers of power don’t listen to the boys at the top. The only way to make a going proposition of it is to consolidate as much power as possible at the center and the very act of centralizing power leads to tyranny.
The most direct chokehold possible is physical. China’s rulers, faced with vast territory and population, turned to the water empire. The modern West is quickly rediscovering a more sophisticated form of hydraulic despotism, cloaked in talk of saving the planet and providing for everyone’s needs.
Western resources are not innately centralized, which makes seizing control of them and routing them through a central point more difficult. This has to be done legislatively and has to be justified by a universal benefit or a crisis. One example of this is FDR’s Agricultural Adjustment Act which allowed the government to control wheat grown on a farm for private consumption. Another is nationalizing health care by routing the commercial activity of medicine through government organs. Both services and commodities can be controlled in this manner.
But the larger challenge is that the West is rich and a water empire depends on scarcity. Central control is much less potent if there is plenty of the commodity or service available. It’s only when shortages are created in bread or health care that the system really wields power by rationing a scarce commodity or service.
If a resource is scarce, then the water empire has to distribute it efficiently. But if a resource is widely available, then the water empire has to find ways of making it scarce, until the demand vastly outstrips the supply.
The modern water empire is dependent for its power on manufactured shortages. The rise of the progressive state was closely tied to its exploitation of shortages. Its challenge has been to win the race with industrial productivity by manufacturing shortages and destroying wealth faster than it could be created. While the machine of industry created wealth, the machine of government destroyed it. Today the machine of government is very close to winning the race, creating a state of permanent shortages.
Manufactured shortages are the great project of modern governments. This manufacture is done by prohibitively increasing the cost of creating and distributing products and services, by controlling the means of production in the name of wealth redistribution and by prohibiting the production on the grounds that it is immoral or dangerous. Over the 20th century the transition was made from the first to the second and finally to the third.
